Romanian Liga 1 2026/27 — Three Matchdays In: Betting Guide for the Rounds Ahead
The 2026/27 Romanian SuperLiga kicked off on 18 July 2026 — by matchday four, here is the competition framework and the betting markets worth tracking through May 2027.

The Romanian SuperLiga 2026/27 kicked off on 18 July 2026 and runs through May 2027. Sixteen teams, thirty regular-season matchdays, then the split into a top-6 championship play-off and a bottom-10 play-out. Here is the framework you need to read the markets for the rest of the season.

Competition framework 2026/27

The 16 clubs face each other twice in the regular season (30 matchdays). After matchday 30, the top 6 enter the championship play-off for the title and European spots; the bottom 10 enter the play-out to avoid relegation. Per the LPF SuperLiga Regulations, on entry to the play-off/play-out regular-season points are halved (rounded up) — a quirk that compresses any regular-season lead and materially reshapes the title-market and top-6-market pricing from matchday 30 onward. Positions 7 and 8 from the play-out contest a Conference League qualifier.

The 16 clubs for 2026/27: Argeș Pitești, Botoșani, CFR Cluj, Corvinul Hunedoara, Csíkszereda Miercurea Ciuc, Dinamo București, Farul Constanța, FCSB, Oțelul Galați, Petrolul Ploiești, Rapid București, Sepsi OSK, Universitatea Cluj, Universitatea Craiova, UTA Arad and FC Voluntari. Corvinul Hunedoara, Sepsi OSK and FC Voluntari are newly promoted.

Defending champion + outright market

Universitatea Craiova won the title in 2025/26 — the club's fifth. FCSB remain the all-time record holders with 28 titles through 2024/25, followed by CFR Cluj with a very strong recent run. Outright title odds traditionally place FCSB, CFR Cluj, Craiova and Rapid as the main favourites; the top two names sit below 5.00 and the fifth name rarely above 15.00. With the outright title market compressed, the derivative markets (play-off finishing order, "top-2 finish", "top-4 finish") historically show more dispersion between books than the straight title price — worth comparing.

Europe in 2026/27

Four Romanian clubs entered UEFA qualifying in 2026/27: Universitatea Craiova (Champions League qualifying as defending champion), Universitatea Cluj (Europa League qualifying), CFR Cluj and FCSB (Conference League qualifying). Romania's league champion enters the Champions Path second qualifying round (per the UEFA access list for associations ranked 15th-24th on the coefficient). Losers at each stage drop into the Europa League or Conference League path — the exact round each Romanian club is in during any given Liga 1 weekend shifts weekly; check uefa.com before betting on rotation. UEFA fixtures play on Thursdays, which forces rotation for the Liga 1 weekend rounds through the July-November window. Confirmed lineups appear roughly 60 minutes before kick-off.

Kick-off slots + VAR

Liga 1 rounds distribute across four days — Friday evening, Saturday (afternoon and evening), Sunday (afternoon and evening), and Monday evening. The Friday and Monday slots typically carry one lower-billing match each; the main coverage sits Saturday and Sunday. Watch the odds movement at the tail of each round: Sunday evening and Monday evening lines already price in results from earlier in the matchday.

VAR is active across the entire SuperLiga from 2022/23 onward. Since 2025/26 the system runs on a Sportec Solutions HUB (FRF partnership through 2033, six 4K cameras per stadium). Betting-market impact: disallowed goals after review, late-decision penalties, plus 8-12 additional stoppage-time minutes per match on the season average — direct feeds into Over/Under, BTTS and cash-out timing.

Markets worth tracking

  • Over/Under 2.5 goals: Liga 1 tends toward Under 2.5 more often than the top-5 European leagues, especially on weekends when European-competition clubs rotate.
  • Both Teams to Score: in the classic derbies (FCSB — Rapid, FCSB — Dinamo, CFR — U Cluj) "No" is worth comparing with "Yes" — the defensive shape of these fixtures has historically been under-reflected in the "No" price.
  • Asian handicap: on favourites' away trips to play-out clubs, the -1.5 or -2 line is worth comparing with the straight 1X2; European-fixture weeks widen price gaps between books due to rotation uncertainty.
  • Corners: worth checking on FCSB, Craiova and CFR matches — high-possession sides. Don't assume a fixed line; compare each club's current-season average against the line on offer (Sofascore and FRF match reports both publish corner counts).

Key matchdays

The FCSB — Rapid and FCSB — Dinamo derbies play twice in the regular season and, if both clubs finish top-6, again in the play-off. Matches against the newly promoted (Corvinul Hunedoara, Sepsi OSK, FC Voluntari) frequently produce upsets in the early stretch until those clubs adapt to top-flight pace.

ONJN-licensed operators

In Romania, online sports betting is legal only at operators holding a Class I licence from Oficiul Național pentru Jocuri de Noroc (ONJN). Brands with an active 2026 licence include Superbet, Betano, Fortuna, Get's Bet, Unibet, Netbet and Sportingbet — each operated by a specific legal entity (some Romanian SRLs, some Malta companies operating in Romania via permanent establishment). Verify the licence-holding entity and validity date on ONJN's official list at onjn.gov.ro/licentiati-clasa-i/. The blacklist of unauthorised operators is published by ONJN at onjn.gov.ro/lista-neagra/; ONJN identifies unauthorised sites and orders ISPs to block them (ANCOM cooperates on data exchange, it does not issue the blocking orders itself).

Tax withheld at source

Every ONJN-licensed operator withholds tax at source before paying you, per Fiscal Code art. 110 as amended by Law 141/2025 (effective 1 August 2025):

  • 4% on winnings up to 10,000 RON
  • 400 RON + 20% on the portion between 10,001 and 66,750 RON
  • 11,750 RON + 40% on the portion above 66,750 RON

Tax applies per payment (per withdrawal), not on the running balance. Unauthorised operators withhold nothing — the personal tax risk at ANAF falls back on the player.

Minimum age + KYC

Participation in any form of gambling is restricted to persons over 18 (OUG 77/2009 art. 7(1), which defines a participant as "a natural person of legal age, at least 18 years old"). Licensed operators must verify age at account opening as part of the KYC procedure required by Law 129/2019 on money-laundering prevention (Romania's transposition of EU Directive AMLD4, with later amendments for AMLD5). Documents typically required: national ID or passport, proof of address (recent utility bill or bank statement), and at many operators a live selfie. Without completed KYC, withdrawals are blocked.

Complaints + disputes

If you have a dispute with a licensed operator (blocked payment, account closed without reason, KYC refused), you have two direct paths: file a petition online with ONJN via portal.onjn.gov.ro (pre-filing instructions at onjn.gov.ro/cititi-inainte-de-a-depune-o-petitie/), and consumer complaint to the National Consumer Protection Authority (ANPC — anpc.ro). ONJN handles regulatory-framework breaches; ANPC handles consumer-rights breaches.

Advertising context

Emergency Ordinance 82/2023 (in force since 6 October 2023) tightened gambling advertising in Romania: outdoor billboards capped at 35 m², a 6:00-23:00 audiovisual window, restrictions on bonus promotion and a mandatory warning message. Separately, CNA Decision No. 573/2025 (the new Audiovisual Code, in force since 6 October 2025) bans public personalities (athletes, artists, influencers) from appearing in gambling advertising — TV, radio or social media.

Responsible play

Betting is entertainment, not income. Set a monthly budget. Every ONJN-licensed operator is required to provide limit tools (deposit, loss, session time) in your account panel — use them, don't just tick the box.

ONJN Order No. 79/2025 (signed 13 June 2025, in force from 17 June 2025) established a national unified register covering both permanent self-exclusion and a temporary play-break, binding on every licensed operator. You can request registration at any operator and it applies automatically at all.

If betting is becoming a problem, call Tel-Verde on 0800 800 099 — free from any Romanian network, Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00. For out-of-hours support, the Joc Responsabil Association online chat with psychologists is available 24/7 at jocresponsabil.ro. Office contact by email at contact@jocresponsabil.ro. The Association also offers a validated self-assessment questionnaire on the same site.
